Experience report language study trip Malta

Learn English in the sun, beach and sea

The English language is also becoming increasingly important for our everyday working life, so we decided to fly to Malta, St. Julians, for a fortnight in May 2014, to take an English language course there.

" There is hardly a better place to learn English. Culture, climate, sun, sea - everything is just right here. There's a reason why language holidays to St Julian's in Malta are so popular for learning the most important language in the world."

This trip was made possible thanks to the financial support of a scholarship for gifted students and the support of ELHA Maschinenbau with regard to educational leave. Some colleagues had already gained experience with the Sprachcaffe language programme in Malta and had many positive impressions. Sprachcaffe is a very large language school in a "residence", which means that accommodation and lessons are under one roof. The building is an old fortress from the British colonial era with a large inner courtyard and looks very imposing. There are three types of accommodation: standard flat, comfort flat and studio. The Sprachcaffe also has a bistro restaurant and a large private pool with sun loungers.

We completed an intensive English course in Malta (6 lessons of 45 minutes per day, 5 days a week). The lessons took place directly at the residence. We had to complete an online placement test before arriving in Malta and were placed in the appropriate courses straight away. However, we had the opportunity to change levels quickly and easily at any time if we felt under- or overchallenged. The lessons were varied and you could repeat grammatical basics and practise speaking. During the intensive course in the afternoon, the focus was again on speaking freely, which helped us a lot to speak more fluently.

We came into contact with people from many different countries, particularly through the class groups that were formed. Thanks to the many different accents of the different native languages, we learnt to use and understand the English language even better. After the lessons, we were then able to book the organised leisure activities or explore the island on our own.

Malta beach crystal clear water and sunshine galore

On the one hand, Malta has very beautiful places and sights, such as the neighbouring island of Comino with its Blue Lagoon and the Azure Window on the island of Comino, but it is also bare and very run-down in places, as there are many empty houses, hardly any sandy beaches and few green spaces.

In conclusion, I can say that the language study trip to Malta had a particularly positive effect on my English skills. All in all, the support provided by Sprachcaffe was also very good. Overall, I would recommend a language holiday, but you should find out exactly which country you are travelling to, which organisation you are working with, which goals you want to achieve and what expectations you have of a language holiday.
