Field report from Marcel R.

Master's thesis at ELHA

As a working student, my existing relationship with the company helped me decide on a topic to complete my degree. I was already familiar with various fields of work and tasks, so I was able to identify possible areas of work for my Master's thesis. ELHA was open to the suggestions I made and after consultation with the people responsible, the topic was finalised and a supervising professor was found.

My work deals with the multi-body modelling of the complex ELHA-specific transfer centre "FM3+X hd". The focus of the modelling was on the spindle row turrets, which were still part of a development project at the time and had to be integrated into the existing one. The aim of the work was an initial stability analysis of the new turrets on the existing machine concept. For this purpose, existing CAD data of the high-mass components, the bearing and guide systems and the drive components were used and their mass properties were stored.

For the dynamic analysis, the components were linked to each other with determined stiffness and damping values. With the help of the coupled simulation, the drive controls set up in the signal-oriented model could be linked with the axes of the multi-body model and a controlled motion simulation could be realised. For the required stability analysis, machining forces had to be generated in the signal-orientated model and connected as disturbance variables in the model at appropriate points via the coupling. To support this complex topic, the company was able to draw on the expertise of a research institute from its existing cooperation with the company.

Regular interim reports from me to ELHA and the supervisors and their feedback showed that I was on the right track and gave me the necessary confidence to continue with my work, so that in the end I could look back on a successful Master's degree.
