Field report from Norbert R.
I am studying mechanical engineering in my fifth semester at the University of Paderborn in co-operation with the company ELHA-MASCHINENBAU Liemke KG.
After finishing secondary school in Hövelhof, I started an apprenticeship as a tool mechanic at Hella in Paderborn. After successfully completing my training, I decided to leave the company to continue my education. I also completed my Abitur at the Westfalenkolleg in Paderborn. I then decided to do a dual study programme leading to a bachelor's degree, in cooperation with ELHA.
I now attend the university in Paderborn as a block course during the lecture periods, which means I'm at university all week like any "normal" student. During the semester breaks, I work at ELHA in various departments that complement the course content. My own wishes can be taken into account when it comes to which specialised department of the company I can work in.
This practical relevance is immensely important in the degree programme and ELHA can supplement and clarify a lot of the course content thanks to the most innovative methods and latest technologies. Due to the flat hierarchies in the company, you quickly get the right contact person and good solutions for every problem. In addition, there are also other students at ELHA who you can go to with questions and uncertainties and with whom you can discuss and solve problems
In conclusion, I can only say that a dual study programme offers many advantages. Practical relevance, competent contacts and fellow students are an advantage for progressing through the programme. Getting to know the company and colleagues in the various departments at the same time is an advantage for personal professional development. Towards the end of my degree programme, in consultation with ELHA, I have the opportunity to decide on a specific career path based on the qualifications I have acquired. For me personally, this means focussing on project planning and management for my future career
